{"id":140,"date":"2016-01-09T16:44:09","date_gmt":"2016-01-09T16:44:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fanshencox.com\/home\/?p=140"},"modified":"2016-02-03T06:16:26","modified_gmt":"2016-02-03T06:16:26","slug":"this-week-as-an-artivist-interesting-faces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fanshencox.com\/home\/this-week-as-an-artivist-interesting-faces\/","title":{"rendered":"This Week as an Artivist 1\/9\/16: Interesting Faces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/k0d9EcGFshs?rel=0&amp;controls=0&amp;showinfo=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<strong>TRANSCRIPT<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Alright this is gonna be so far from perfect or what\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">I wanted it to be and that&#8217;s cool. So<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0this is mostly for myself because I\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">used to keep a diary when I was young\u00a0<\/span>and it&#8217;s been so valuable to have those. A<span class=\"s1\">nyway I decided to just try to force\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">myself to make these videos because other\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">things that I&#8217;m posting are things that\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">we&#8217;ve planned, and really<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0thought a lot about &#8211; and so I\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">want to force myself to also try\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">storytelling in this way as well. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">anyway I want to talk about this\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">incredible journey that I have been on,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">where I&#8217;m finally actually getting paid\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">to be an actor, which is amazing, like I can say that I am\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">a professional actor and after so many\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">years of working towards that, that&#8217;s just incredible. S<\/span><span class=\"s1\">o anyway here&#8217;s what I did this week:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">First of all I spent a lot of time\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">especially today doing social media\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">posts. I posted throughout the year\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">once a month or once every couple of\u00a0<\/span>months the new Q&amp;A video that we just\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">posted which is &#8220;Tell your own damn\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">story.&#8221; Then I also posted about the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Mesa show which is next month, which is really\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">cool because the last time we were in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Mesa there were probably three people in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">the audience from the afternoon or\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">morning show, and that included people\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">who work for the theater. And it was a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">blow to the ego for sure. I was\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">heartbroken by that and I just was\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">thinking, &#8220;Gosh maybe this show isn&#8217;t good&#8221;&#8230;and,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">and they brought us back! And so I&#8217;m\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">really excited &#8211; so that&#8217;s coming up so I\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">posted about that. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Also we have all these\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">great videos and so one of them that&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span>coming out is this brilliant idea by\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Chandra Crudup, my Production\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Manager, who you&#8217;ll meet &#8211; you&#8217;ll\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">hear about her a lot &#8211; and she\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">suggested that we do\u00a0<\/span>Team One Drop videos to introduce people\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">to all the freaking amazing people\u00a0<\/span>behind the show &#8211; because I don&#8217;t do it\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">alone by any means. I have an incredible\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">amount of help. So I&#8217;ve been working\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">with Alex Regalado who was one of the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">editors of the long version of the film and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">we&#8217;ve been working together &#8211; she&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">been cutting these Team One Drop\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">videos together and sending me notes and I give her notes and I&#8217;m\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">really excited about that. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Okay I had an\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">audition this week &#8211; a commercial audition &#8211;\u00a0<\/span>for &#8211; and this is really good for me &#8211; that\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">the age was 40, and I was like,\u00a0 &#8220;Cool.&#8221; It&#8217;s crazy to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">me because I know that would make most\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">women in Hollywood freak out and I\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">feel such a sense of relief that I&#8217;m\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">actually going out for things that are\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">close to my age. I would just always get\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">so stressed when I was going up for\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">something a lot younger and I didn&#8217;t\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">book. But I love this. I wanted to read to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">you the description so, &#8220;Matilda (it&#8217;s a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">commercial for a bank) Matilda is\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">beautiful, casual, curious about the world,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">little makeup (YES I was like, YES! when I read\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">that!), interesting faces. It&#8217;s me &#8211; &#8216;interesting faces.&#8217; I&#8217;m cool with that,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">I feel like I can do that &#8211; I can\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">do all of those things. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So I have to get my\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">flights for Mesa that is exciting\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">and coming up and it&#8217;s time to get the flights\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">for that and I&#8217;ma do that this week. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">applied to the United Solo Theatre\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Festival. I got an email that they\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">extended their deadline\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">and I was like, &#8220;I just have to do this!&#8221; It\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">takes place on theatre row in New York\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">City, so why not? Why the freak not? So\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">I applied to that. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We did two shows at the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Museum of Tolerance with Heather Oliver\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">as my Production Manager and they\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">were both amazing. Monday&#8217;s show there\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">were definitely more Black folks in the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">audience and the reason I know that is\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">because they were doing\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">call-and-response with me, which I really\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">appreciate and when I wrote the show I\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">had that in my head, and so it was just\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">really nice. It&#8217;s always nice to have an\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">audience that actually interacts\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">during the show. On Wednesday they didn&#8217;t\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">necessarily interact, but it&#8217;s so\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">interesting to me too because I play\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">this &#8211; do you do this? I&#8217;ll bet you do this, like I play this awful mind game with\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">myself during the show where I&#8217;m like, &#8220;Oh they hate it&#8221; and I know, I\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">know, a better actor would not do that,\u00a0<\/span>but it&#8217;s part of what&#8217;s going through my\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">head &#8211; and I hope to evolve in it and\u00a0<\/span>not be so anymore &#8211; but yeah I was\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">thinking that, and then afterwards\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">there was an outpouring of love and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">support and so they really enjoyed it;\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">they just took it in very differently than\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">that Black group and for all I know the Black folks\u00a0<\/span>might have hated it! And shout out to those\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">teachers in Sacramento who then went on\u00a0<\/span>the Facebook page and gave us a\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">whole bunch of new &#8216;likes&#8217; and it was really\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">lovely &#8211; just a great time at the Museum\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">of Tolerance; I&#8217;m so grateful to have\u00a0<\/span>that gig and hope I&#8217;ll be there are a lot more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">My husband and I &#8211; Diego and I &#8211; watched\u00a0&#8220;Making a Murderer&#8221; on Netflix and it&#8217;s freaking\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">amazing if you haven&#8217;t seen it &#8211; although\u00a0<\/span>it will also make you infuriated because\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">I&#8217;ve listened to all of &#8220;Serial&#8221; about\u00a0<\/span>Adnan Sayed &#8211; the first one &#8211; and\u00a0&#8220;Undisclosed Podcast&#8221; and this will just\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">continue to make you so frustrated about\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">the criminal justice system. We have to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">do better. But it&#8217;s important to see\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">these because you have an\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">understanding of the ways police\u00a0<\/span>departments and lawyers and\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">judges manipulate the system. So watch\u00a0<\/span>that if you haven&#8217;t seen it, it is freaking\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">amazing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ok: I introduced some women to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">this incredible filmmaking group that I&#8217;m in. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I returned some emails about an\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">exhibit in LA that I hopefully\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">will be a part of. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I got cast in a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">reading of a play called &#8220;Luck of the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Irish&#8221; that I&#8217;m doing next week, so I&#8217;ll\u00a0<\/span>take some video about that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I got tickets\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">for my mom to come to LA and she&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span>coming in an hour and I gotta go pick her up from the airport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And finally I&#8217;m\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">so excited because my best friend is\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">studying philosophy &#8211; which is just\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">amazing in and of itself &#8211; and she&#8217;s a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Black woman and she is looking at race\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">within philosophy and so she sent me&#8230;can\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">I&#8230;I&#8217;ll just say she sent me a paper to read\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">and I, like, the little bit that I\u00a0<\/span>understood was so on point with what I\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">believe in and just the\u00a0<\/span>representation of her as a Black woman\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">doing philosophy &#8211; a PhD is what she&#8217;s gonna\u00a0<\/span>be going for &#8211; is just so exciting to me. It\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">was a beautiful way to end this week of artivism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So thanks for watching\u00a0and thanks Mama Trudy for watching, because I know you are.
